casserole of my life

Gearing for pet ownership & responsibility

concocted on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 @ 8:41 am for Parenting

The boy has shown a fondness for small animals and am particularly fond of alley cats he found near his school. But both my husband and I are not cat lovers. We prefer dogs and have been thinking of keeping another one since mine died in 2002.

Anyway, we went to check out some dogs and chinchillas last weekend. We have no intentions to get one at the moment as we want to wait till the boy is slightly older. The trip was really to get the little one interested in other types of domestic animals and to cultivate his interest in pet keeping. But we might get a terrapin just to get things started.

I think there is a need to drill in the concept of pet ownership and responsibility to him first before we can keep one at home. That he will have to care for the dog, learn to walk the dog and wipe its backside after the animal is done with its business. The latter act is proving to be extremely difficult at this moment, considering the boy won’t even wipe his own now.

  1. Hi, would you like to join my fight against puppymills?

DC: I’ve to find some time to check out what it’s all about first…

  2. Haha, your last point reminds me of a story my friend’s son told me about a P1 boy in his school (ACS of course) who asked his teacher to go with him to the toilet so she can clean his ass when he’s done with his business. Don’t let your son end up like that!

Fuzzoo: That’s what I told him – teachers are not going to wipe your backside!

  3. Please consider adopting if you finally decide to get a dog. It will indeed be difficult to find a pure breed dog (and one that is HDB approved). Pure breds in these pounds are also almost certainly adult. However, you can be sure that you will not be contributing to the puppy mill industry. Buying an adult also ensure that 1) you know exactly the dog’s temperament, and 2) you’re less likely to fall for the “cute puppy” image and forget that puppies grow up.

Good luck whatever your choice is!

Eveline: Thanks for the highlight. I don’t really think it’s a problem because I have had a dog before and I’m a very responsible pet owner. She was with me for 10 years until she passed away.

  4. I was so tickled with your last sentence..hehe..we just taught Damien how to clean up after his big business, cos he told us he dare not to poo poo in school because: “I can’t wash my buttocks after that!!” haha.. :P

Eileen: Mine won’t even do his big biz anywhere else outside of home – not even at his granny’s!
