casserole of my life

Just in time

primary educationThis is a piece of welcoming news for us. Especially now that he’ll only be going to P1 in 2010. Whatever kinks they’ll have in the system when they start this should hopefully be sorted out by then. And probably he’ll benefit from the better quality teachers too. Of course, the best is beginning classes at 8am because it’ll be no different from his kindergarten now.

It’s about time they give these kids some school/life balance! Just the other day, a P5 kid in the life skill course I conducted made an argument that schools should not have rules. One of the points she spoke for was that the co-curriculum activities should be cut down because they’re already doing a lot of courses outside of school and as such, they have very little rest time! I can certainly emphatise with that but I believe parents should also help to balance that out.

Well, I’m just hoping that my boy will get a good foundation from his primary school education and that schooling life wouldn’t be so stressful for him. So yeah, delaying his P1 enrollment has become a good thing now!

  1. Lessons at single session schools start at 8am but the kids have to be in school by 7:40am for assembly/silent reading.

The MOE’s plan does sound good on paper but execution might turn out to be something else. Remember “teach less learn more”? – I don’t see this happening; what I know is that everyone is still getting tuition for their kids.

Fuzzoo: Huh? Assembly at 7.40am… :( But I guess, still better compared to now.

  2. i really hope that school now will be more interesting and enriching for the kids than when we were in there.

imp: I get the impression that it’s more stressful now…I remember it was far more relax at least during my time…

  3. That’s nice.. I wonder when Malaysia will be like that.

ZM: Well, I expect the system will improve so you may have something positive to look forward to by the time your girls get to mainstream schools.

  4. Damien’s primary school starts at 8am, and yes, they have to be in school by 7.40am for a 20-min reading session. However, classes ends at 1.30pm, as compared to some schools which ends at 12.30pm or 1.00pm.
