Chicken pox misery for mother and son

concocted on Sun, 18 Nov 2007 @ 6:46 pm for Parenting

chicken poxHe was still his happy self the first two days especially since there were less than five blisters on his body.  We had thought it wouldn’t be too bad and even the doctor felt he didn’t need medication.  Then came third day, he was all feverish and his body was covered with a flock of red bumps.

And those of you who remembered how having chicken pox was like will know; this is no fun.  It’s painful.  It’s itchy.  It’s hella uncomfortable.

I try to console him by showing him pictures of children with chicken pox on the Internet so that he’ll understand that everyone gets it.  I explain the process to him, why he shouldn’t touch the blisters now, and how the blisters will dry up to form scabs later.

Actually I can’t even bear to put up a bigger pic of him here.  And right now I can only kiss him gingerly on his cheeks.  It’ll probably be another week before I can kiss and hug him tight again without him going ooch and ouch.

Blame the dad

concocted on Fri, 16 Nov 2007 @ 4:16 pm for Parenting

It seems I wrote too soon.

At the clinic on Wednesday, he was prancing around like a monkey because he wanted to attract the attention of two girls, who looked to be older than him.  He couldn’t take his eyes off them!  One minute he would be sitting beside them, and the next, dancing in front of them trying to show off in the style of 1-minute fame.

We were completely aghast, yet very amused at his behavior.   While I was laughing like crazy and wishing for a bag over my head,  his dad walked over to the counter to peer at the register.  And then he returned to tell his son the names of the two girls!

If my boy’s going to start early on girls, we know who’s to be blamed.

He’s gonna get it sooner or later

Doraemon the movieTwo blisters on his bum and it’s confirmed.  He’s got chicken box.  It’s definitely from the school as there’s an outbreak although I only read the notice this morning.

My first reaction was panic.  *GASP*  Oh no, what should I do?  And my first thoughts?  Bring him to the doctor’s!  Get him an injection!  Clip his nails!

I tried calling my mum but couldn’t get to her.  So I sent a message to my best friend who promptly replied with a few notes to soothe my nerves.  See a doc.  Apply lotion.  No dark sauce.  No seafood.  Fish is fine.  Drink plenty of barley water.  Okay, I remember some of these from my own experience of chicken pox 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, he’s oblivious to what’s happening inside him and has no clue what chicken pox is.  The only thing he’s probably happy to learn is that he doesn’t have to go to school for about two weeks.

And me?  I’m just hoping that the two weeks will pass quickly without having to do any mad chicken dance.

Mumsgather, my Gemini united blogpal, has confirmed that her hubby loves her because he let her dragged him to collect a goodie bag from some trashy women’s magazine one weekend morning.

In that case,  I think mine loves me too.  He actually bought this trashy magazine which I no longer read only because it has my Takuya Kimura on the cover.  I have completely missed it when it was out last week!

Woo hoo.  He’s my darling!  Takuya My husband I mean.

Are your children’s personal care products safe?

concocted on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 @ 12:25 am for Parenting

earth's best mineral based spf30 organic sunblockWhenever I can, I’ll buy organic or natural personal care products for the boy especially those that he uses on a daily basis like body wash or toothpaste.  With so many concerns over hazardous ingredients found in many commercial products, I can’t help but try to be a bit more vigilant.  (AKA KIASU.)

Parents who are interested to know if your children’s personal care products are safe enough might want to look up the Safety Guide To Children’s Personal Care Products from EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database.  The guide has comprehensive information on the types of ingredients to avoid as well as the best picks from common brands such as baby powder, baby wipes, toothpaste, shampoo and sunscreen.

And while we’re on the topic of sunscreen, you may also like to read my reviews on the two safest and most effective sunblocks; one being Badger SPF30 and the other being Keys Solar Rx SPF30+ over at Viva Woman.
