Today’s my mum’s birthday and as usual, I headed back with a cake. At the cake shop earlier, the lady had asked me how many candles I needed. I said it doesn’t matter. Just put a few in the box.
Yes, I didn’t quite remember exactly how old my mum is but that was not the reason. The real reason was because I know they wouldn’t be put to use at all.
My mum is the sort who doesn’t fancy birthday celebrations. Well, not in an elaborate way at least. Some of my brothers used to take her out for a lavish dinner complete with golden tableware during this day. But my mum got tired of the fanfare and started making excuses whenever they suggested so. She’ll rather have it quietly.
So that’s what we did. Just a cake. No candles. No singing. Nothing showy but that’s how it should be. To do it the way she’s comfortable with because it’s her birthday!
My mum’s 75 by the way.
