It’s hard to go out these days on my own without being interrogated by my son. And it’s doubly hard to go out without promising to buy something back for him.
The inquisitive boy will persist in asking me where I’m going and will not stop until I give him a specific answer. And out of convenience, I’ll usually say I’m heading towards town. But he doesn’t stop. “Mummy go TOWN? Mummy buy what?”
It so happened that the last few times I said TOWN, I was going to Takashimaya and I promised to bring back his favourite Uncle Miki cheese cake. That promptly stopped all the questioning as he was happy to hear what he wanted to hear.
Then last week, I had to make a trip to Chinatown and again, I was not spared the incessant questioning. Again, I told him that I was going to town.
He: “TOWN? Mummy buy Uncle Miki cheese cake okay?”
Me: “Oh, mummy’s not going to that part of town so no Uncle Miki cheese cake today.”
He looked at me slightly bewildered, and then blurted: “WHAT HAPPENED TO TOWN?”
So now when I go out, I have to consciously remind myself not to mention the word TOWN to confuse him. Like yesterday when I did go to town again, I just told him “mummy is meeting a friend.” Surprisingly, he didn’t ask further.
And here I am wondering how come it took me so long to learn that the real trouble was with my poor choice of word?

Sometimes honesty is the best policy.

I prefer the Japanese cheesecake to the regular ones. They are light and not too rich. Oh yum!
ee: Yes, I actually don’t fancy cheese cake that much but this is lovely!

Gavin is such an inquisitive boy and there is nothing with that. it just shows that he is smart.
Belle: I think it’s a usual trait for kids his age…

They really catch on with the idea that stuff gets bought when you go out of the house.
The crayolas interrogate when I leave the room “where’s mommy?” and they also ask to go along “can I go?”. Dyou still get the separation anxiety even if you pop out for shopping?
carrie: From his end slightly…but he’ll always let me go after the incessant questionings…

Can’t remember if it’s the same cheesecake but the one I like used to be at the basement of Paragon (not sure if it’s still even there, haven had it in years)
Town, it’s a pretty confusing word cos everybody’s definition and understanding of it is different. Like my parents, going down to TOWN, probably means jalan besar while going to TOWN means orchard road to us….no wonder Gavin confused! heehee
Jan: Is it the same cheese cake? But this one is from the basement at Takashimaya. Ask for the original…very lovely.
And for town, yes! The old folks definition of town is very different…
