This morning was the boy’s first school excursion and guess what? I decided to tag along. As a volunteer in name, but really with the objective of being a protective mummy.
I suppose a good excuse I can give is that I’m a hands on mum who likes to get involved in my child’s education process. But the truth is I’m really not very good when it comes to letting go of my kid and am not keen on the idea of giving him independence as yet. Certainly not too healthy I know, but well, that’s me.
Anyway, we had a good time and I was glad I went along. It made both of us very happy and I also had the opportunity to watch him interact with the other children in his class. And yes, as a volunteer, I also did my part and helped to ensure that all the other kids were taken care as well.
But of course, my heart was only with him.

Always thought that doing something like this would be meaningful but never had a chance.
But I do like visiting them in nursery..and seeing them manage things they don’t always do at home like keep their toys and sing songs with their friends.
carrie: You do? And I thought perhaps I’m being too kiasu or something…

i did it, too, and kids loved having me around. but, things changed when they reached high school. as much as possible, they didn’t want to see us anymore except during concerts, and award ceremony.
Belle: Oh, I’m aware that this will come. I’m prepared that he won’t want to hold my hand very soon even…so perhaps that’s why I try to get involved as much during this time…

You are not alone. I’m doing that too! I even volunteered to share with the class about Chinese New Year because I know that will help Nikita to appreciate her heritage. We are all kiasu parents.
CM: Haha…so good to learn that I’m not alone…

Not too bad.. you get to spend time with him, he enjoys it, and you get your objective done.
Next time I too will be a volunteer.
ZM: I believe you would too…you’re a pretty hands on mum. And it’s quite enjoyable really.
