casserole of my life

Marutama Ramen @ Central

concocted on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 @ 10:18 pm for Eats

Of all the Japanese restaurants on the 3rd level of Central at Eu Tong Sen street, I decided to pick this one.  Marutama Ra-men.  The rest were screaming casual dining but the settings looked too stiff for my liking.  This one seemed cool enough.   It looked like a hip ramen shop straight out from Tokyo with cooks in bandanas.  In fact, it reminded me of a similar Japanese eatery we visited in Taiwan some years ago.

I ordered the Marutama Ramen in chicken soup which by the way, is their best seller.  The ramen was served in a very pretty looking bowl.  The broth was clear and the noodles were springy.  But it reminded me of instant noodles.  Okay, better tasting of course but it was definitely different from the ramen I am used to.

This Marutama Ramen is a just too light for my tastebuds.  While others have raved about the ramen here with some calling it the best they’ve tasted, I still prefer the ramen at Tampopo with its richly flavoured black pig broth.

  1. Does not look like there is much meat in that ramen!

Loong: You’ve got a sharp eye. That was the only piece…

  4. I actually like my ramen to be light tasting… ;)The ramen looks a bit like ‘mee sua’?

Eileen: It’s thinner than the usual…a bit like some of the instant noodles we eat. If you like light taste, maybe you’ll like this.

  5. I am a noodle person and I love ramen! I prefer my base to be thick and noodles to be crunchy. My fav is Ajisen Ton Toro Ramen! Now I am feeling hungry…

msff: Hmmm…then maybe you’re like me…the ramen here maybe too light for you too.
