casserole of my life

That shopping list

concocted on Fri, 16 Mar 2007 @ 10:50 am for Femina

One of my colleagues recently went to Vietnam and bought some nice tote bags.  She’s going to pass me one soon.  No, I didn’t ask her to get for me although I had wanted to.  I just offered to buy it from her because it’s an extra piece she has.

Well, I find it really difficult to get friends or colleagues who are travelling to buy stuff for me even when they offer to.  There’s always a consideration of their convenience.

Moreover, I’ve seen some girlfriends complaining when their friends get them to buy stuff.  So I rarely ask even when offered and the few times I did, the items were very small with specific information given on where to obtain.

In the same vein, I don’t mind a shopping list from my friends if detailed information is supplied and the items are not bulky.  But there are some things I would freak out at.

Some years ago, a friend, on knowing I was heading to Bangkok had asked me to get her some undies.  NO WAY!  I don’t know about others, but this is something so personal I really would never think about.  My friend thought I was so strange to have spurned her request.  Even my best friend thought it was perfectly fine and didn’t understand my strong reactions.

So ladies.  Was I overreacting?  Would you ask your friend to buy undies for you?  Or would you buy undies for your girlfriends?

  3. With specific information, I don’t mind helping friends shop for stuff. That said, I also had a very bad experience with a close gf who refused to pay me and take the goods after I bought the stuff at her instruction. So I’m more selective these days.

DR: What? Refused to pay you? Waaa…that’s so terrible of her…

  4. I think you’d probably have to be the best of friends to be asking someone else to buy lingerie.

Loong: She was quite close to me at that time. But still, it’s a no no for me. Not even for my best friend. Just too weird.

  5. i have this group of close girlfriends who will travel and exchange shopping lists. of course we’ve ground rules- payment in full, the practical stuff.

it’s been 10yrs and it worked great for us. lingerie is THE THING that has topped our shopping lists. we have no problems buying them, nighties/corsets/undies/lace, whatever. we know one another’s likes/dislikes/sizes/and degree of adventurous spirit.

so now, we realize that we haven’t bought lingerie frm malls in singapore for the past couple of years.

imp: That’s interesting to hear your story and what you and your girlfriends share. Seriously, I really don’t know why I’m so anal about this.

  6. don’t think you’re anal. it’s just your preference.

tell u something, i’d not hesitate to ask the girls to get me lingerie. but i’d hesitate big time asking them to buy me liquor n cosmetics frm DFS. :) those, i’d do it myself.

Haha…I think you’re being considerate too!

  7. eh, I do not ask my gfs to buy those lingerie for me when they go to Bangkok, so I usually will not expect or feel comfortable when I am asked to do that too. It’s like so personal eh!

I do not mind buying them snacks though :P

msfairface: So you also think it’s too personal? For a moment, I thought it was just me being weird.

  8. I won’t ask for underwear - choice, comfort etc is just too personal. Liquor maybe but only from DFS so as not to trouble ppl. Btw, I tagged you :)

Paris: Haha…same league too huh? Thanks for the tag. Will check it out.

  9. I actually don’t mind buying undies for my lady friends..
As long as things are not overly heavy, or that I need to spend a lot of time trying to locate an item, I quite enjoy buying things for friends when I go abroad.

ZM: Yeah, cannot be too heavy or bulky or difficult to find.
