casserole of my life

Calling the bluff

concocted on Thu, 1 Feb 2007 @ 8:50 am for Parenting

I think at some points in our lives, under certain circumstances, most of us have probably resorted to using this ruse.  What am I talking about?

 The stomach ache bluff.

I remember using this excuse when I was younger, in my primary and secondary schools, especially when I didn’t want to attend the PE lessons.

Well, this ruse is still very much in vogue apparently.  One of my 19-year-old teens used it last week.  But it was so poorly executed, I was very tempted to tell her that she should learn it from my 4-year-old son who can delivery it rather convincingly.

He’ll be wincing in pain with both hands pressing on his tummy.  His tone will falter and become weaker and almost breathless by the minute.  Then he’ll drop to the couch and bury his head in the cushions, and cry out softly that he’s got a tummy ache and therefore cannot:

  • learn writing
  • tidy up his toys
  • take his shower
  • drink his water

Or whatever that does not take his fancy.

Although we remembered his earlier excuse, we actually believed him the first couple of times when he called this stomach ache bluff, especially since he has just recovered from a gastric flu last week.  However, the pattern of behaviour became so obvious that everytime he does it now, we just smirk at him.

While this may sound amusing, but I’m also concerned that the boy is telling white lies at such a tender age.  I’ve tried to correct him, but I don’t know if he understood me or maybe like my teens, chose to feign ignorance.  After all, he does know how to feign a stomach ache doesn’t he?

  4. I knew when my daughters were faking something or not. Like if they claimed that they were sick and therefore couldn’t go to school, I asked them to stay in their room and not to turn on the television.

Belle: Wohoho…you’re a very sharp mother! No wonder your daughters are doing so well!

  5. My 5-half-yr-old did that to me just this evening.

Today’s a public holiday here but classes resume tomorrow. During dinner, she held onto her tummy and said, “Mummy my stomach is very pain. I cannot go to school tomorrow.”

I replied, “You ARE going to school tomorrow.”

She then did that nauseous act.. you know, acting like you wanna throw up.. and said, “I want to vomit. I cannot eat dinner. My stomach is very painful. I really cannot go to school tomorrow.”

    How I ask you?

I just ignored her and went about my own business like I did not hear or notice her ‘vomitting act’.

JM: Whoa, your girl even can give you the nauseous act? *rolls eyes and shakes head* Kids…hiaz…our kids…they grow up too fast!
