casserole of my life

Eating along Jalan Kayu

concocted on Tue, 9 Jan 2007 @ 11:59 am for Eats, Places

Mad Jack

Daddy Darth Vader said that there are several new eateries along Jalan Kayu and invited me to check them out.  I accepted even though I knew it was really his excuse to have his favourite Teh Halia (hot ginger tea).

It must have been eons ago since I last ventured into Jalan Kayu.  I vaguely remember Jerry’s BBQ & Grill and of course having roti prata at Thasevi, but I certainly don’t remember any other eateries.

We checked out Mad Jack, a bit of an Australian “Good Day Mate” place.  Their prices are quite good considering their nice ambience.  The plate of fish and chips was $6.90 for example and you can get a plate of spaghetti for as little as $4.50.  Too bad they don’t serve beer because they’re a Halal restaurant.  Otherwise, this is quite a cool place to chill out.

Jalan Kayu

Apart from Mad Jack, we had other interesting finds.

An open-air food market.  A new Selegie Beancurd stall.  An exposed-brick fire roasted gourmet pizza restaurant.  A bakery.  A very arty looking kopitiam-style noodle stall and a rather upmarket Roti Prata Cafeela.  All juxtaposed with older shops either selling provisions or repairing tires.  Daddy commented that it reminded him a little of Koh Samui, probably because the blaring Thai music.

The entire landscape is slightly confusing or refreshing, we couldn’t quite decide.  But we know we’ll definitely be back for more.

So if you’re looking for new places for food, you might want to head down to Jalan Kayu.   It’s definitely more than just roti prata.  And hey, remember your parking coupons if you’re driving cos there are plenty of legal carpark lots available now!
