casserole of my life

Nail biting problem

concocted on Tue, 28 Nov 2006 @ 10:07 am for Parenting

See what he’s doing?  Yup, he’s biting his fingernails.  And sometimes he bites his toenails too.

Since the last time I wrote about him picking his nose, he has moved on to bite his nails.  I know for certain it’s not out of anxiety because he laughs when I scold him.  In fact, he doesn’t want his nails trimmed because he says he wants to bite them.

It has not gotten obsessive so I’m not doing anything about it yet.  While I’m slightly concerned due to the hygiene factor, I think by drawing attention to his actions, it may backfire and make him wants to bite his nails more.  Hopefully, it’ll go away in time and not become a bad habit.

Erm, actually the nail biting problem for me now is about him digging into his backside and smelling his finger afterwards.

  1. Ewwwww…. your son wins the EWWW factor hands down!
Maybe rub raw garlic or chilli on his nails. The taste might put him off.

DRIf it gets bad, I will consider using peppermint rub or something.  Haha…he quite the scary right?

  2. Aiyo…. I don’t know to say about the digging backside and smelling into his finger afterwards portion…kekeke ;-)

    Maybe boys are more adventurous???

How about reading him a book on nail biting?

SSF: That might be an idea…just that he’s a little cheeky so I think he wants to do it for laughs.

Most prob as what you had say, he just want to draw your attention.
Maybe everytime he do such act, give him an very plain but firmed remark. “Take out your hand! It’s not hygienic!”

wtpg: Ha…ya, curious that’s right!  And to be funny…

  5. oh my goodess, what if he gets the sequence right or WRONG in our terms huh? Dig and smell then bite his nails….faintz….

Give him some sort of punishment, if he does that, he will get to play with his favourite toy. Hopefully, he will try to curb that habit because he wants to play with his toy???

Havent encountered this strange habit in my kids yet!!!

Jan: That’s an idea.  I might try it the next time he does it again…
