casserole of my life

Smelly goes mobile!

concocted on Sat, 2 Sep 2006 @ 1:48 pm for Eats

Look what interesting find I spotted at the pasar malam yesterday!!!

A tent.  A table.  A few hanging banners.

A deep fryer.  A stack of pretty paper boxes.

Tupperwares of sauce, pickles and beancurds.

A beautiful lady with a pair of tongs (NOT thongs).

Put these together with whiffs of scathing pungence and what have we got?

A MOBILE STALL OF SMELLY TOFU!

Exactly like a scene out of the Taipei night market.  Except that this is in broad daylight, right here in Singapore.  Totally cool and irresistible!

smelly tofu

This is 台湾臭豆付 or Taiwan smelly tofu.  The texture is much firmer than the ones I had at the Mini Star fermented beancurd stall and doesn’t have an outer crust.

Apparently, this Taiwan setup used to be a stall at Geylang many years back and was even featured in TCS’s 成人杂志 TV programme before.  However, because of the smell and therefore many complaints, the boss decided to close shop and go mobile by selling at flea markets instead.

The taste was lovely but not as good as Mini Star’s.  Perhaps because the beancurds were a tad soggy by the time I brought them home.  They really should have seats around the stall where I could sit and savor the freshly fried delicacy.

I don’t care.  I’m going back today again, and this time, I’m going to park myself at the stall and eat on the spot.

  1. I ate once before but it just dont ’smell’ the same as those in taipei :)

PaddyYou’re right!  It’s not as good as those in Taipei but nevertheless, good enough for me.  In fact, it’s not smelly compared to the stall at Geylang.  But, it was great eating them on the spot.  Hot and crispy on the outside!

  8. I know of people who actually packed these tofu (not fried) back and fried them at home.

KY: Really?  So interesting.  Probably these pple are scared of the recycled oil the vendor uses.
