casserole of my life

Why no have fireworks?

concocted on Thu, 10 Aug 2006 @ 6:11 pm for Eats, Family

What happened to the usual spectacular fireworks display after the National Day Parade?  We endured almost an hour of traffic jam only to find out that there were none to be seen from the Marina Bay or The Fullerton.  Such a shame!  Gavin was so disappointed that he started to whine.  Luckily, there were fountains outside the Oriental Hotel and the Suntec to cheer him up and he was more or less pacified.  So I thought.

Later in the evening, we headed to the Tong Shui Cafe at Zion Road for supper.  Daddy had read that the chee cheong fun was good and wanted to give it a try.  I wasn’t very impressed though, especially not with the weird taste of the black pepper sauce.  But ambience wise, it’s interesting.  Kind of loud and ching chong in style.

Back home, Gavin kept complaining that there were no fireworks.  “Why no have fireworks?” At least 10 times before he slept.  So I had to keep reminding him about 10 times that he saw fountains!  And guess what?  He woke up this morning repeating the same line about the fireworks over and over again.

  3. ermm what u mean no fireworks? got lah. we were at blk 10, dakota crescent. can see clearly from there. u mean u cant even see from marina bay or fullerton? cannot b wut…

Evan: We saw a little bit from the car along Nicoll highway but it was very short burst.  I thought usually it’s longer?  So we headed back to Suntec, and then took a walk to Fullerton.  A policeman there told us that there was no display.  Not sure if he was referring to the fireworks festival this week.  Maybe it was the short burst and we missed it.

  4. Yah ah.. why no firework? :P

Btw, what’s the food in the third column, second row? And the first column, third row? Looks so yummy..

Erika: That’s chee cheong fun, a type of HK dim sum made of rice. The first pix is plain chee cheong fun and two fried dumplings. The second pix is also chee cheong fun but with fritters and dipped in black pepper sauce.

  5. Have leh… we were at Millinieum Walk and could see the firework. Very near too.

U mean Marina bay can’t see? My friends were at the floating restaurant at Fullerton Hotel, will go and check out see if can see from there.

Poor Gavin, he looked very disappointed in the photos…..he must have wanted to see them badly.

SSF: We travelled to Marina Bay then inched slowly towards Nicoll highway.  We caught a glimpse of the fireworks at the National Stadium from the car.  Very low though.  But we expected more.  Because usually it’s quite spectacular.  And a policeman at The Fullerton told us there were no displays that night.

  6. hmm…how come cannot see leh? blocked ah? then can hear anot?

ya, esp kids at this age hor, when their anticipation level is built, they will be very disappointed when they do not get what they anticipated for…..and they go on and on and on….haiz

black pepper sauce on chee cheong fun….sounds weird to me!

Jan: Saw a bit  from the car but was blocked by trees and big trucks.   I remember last year it lasted a good 10 mins or more.  But it seemed so short so we thought there was more.  Haha, Rayner also like that right?  Will make sure you fulfil your promises to him right?

  7. Oh poor Gavin…he can shake hands with my Damien. That silly boy has been asking me everyday since he saw the fireworks display on Tuesday - “Mummy, then today got fireworks or not? How come? Then tomorrow?” I bet Gavin will ask you the same thing for, perhaps one week? ;)

Eileen: Yalor both can shake hands and be good friends.  The best part is Gavin said he’s scared of fireworks but still want to see.

  8. Haha.. he’s good memory huh? And he knows when to complain! That’s good.

I notice Singaporeans are very patriotic huh? You actually drive out to see fireworks huh? And even got him a flag.. Aah.. I wouldn’t be bothered.. but then again, after having Zara, we may actually drive out to show her the fireworks this year.

ZM: My husband has always been a fireworks chaser.  Always try to catch the displays on big occasions.  Btw, the flag was from his school.

  10. Think I’m gg to ask the stupidest question here but what in the world does ching chong mean?

Zara’s mama : Dunno about KLites but the Penang folks are scaring me lately with their mini Msia flags planted all over the cars!!! We caught one car with about 20 flags over the bonnet. Too bad my camera wasn’t around then; it would be quite a sight for you ladies.

DR: 20 flags over the bonnet?  Btw, ching chong is as an ethnic slur directed at the Chinaman.  In this case, I was referring to the decor like the numerous lanterns and calligraphy.

  12. Sara’s only two and is enarmoured with fireworks. So yes, I can see why poor Gavin must have been so disappointed. Sara would’ve asked me the same question two gazillion times.

Hsin: You’ll read all about how enamoured he was with the fireworks we saw last night.
