casserole of my life

Mainstream parenting

concocted on Wed, 9 Aug 2006 @ 12:51 am for Parenting

I need to remind myself that I have to be less anti-conventions when it comes to my kid.  I need to put myself in his shoes and consider his feelings and not make him STICK OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB as seen here.

Instead of dressing him in red and white as requested by the school, I chose to let him go for his National Day celebrations in this white and blue Thomas & Friends outfit.  It’s not that I planned for him to be outstanding but rather, I just didn’t feel like making an effort.  That, plus the fact that he has no suitable white bottom.  And of course I realised that I’ve made a big mistake as soon as we stepped into the school compound because he was totally odd looking.  Luckily, he’s too young to be aware at all and so didn’t feel left out.

I MUST try to be more mainstream from hench forth in order for Gavin to be able to integrate well into the school.  Arrrgh.  That reminds me.  Teacher’s Day is coming isn’t it?

  5. It’s ok when he’s still young, and the rest of the kids are also young and ignorant to notice anything different.

  6. I bet the parents are the one that noticed and not the kids..

Ah well, follow the convention unless he has something against it.

  7. Wow, he does look “outstanding”. What surprises me is that the other parents are so compliant.

  8. it’s ok lar, don’t think he knows how to feel out of place yet…perhaps when he goes in primary school, he will feel a little out of place when a similar situation arises……

  9. I wanted to dress Damien in a white shirt and black shorts too…but the ‘obedient’ daddy insisted on dressing his son in red and white…well, it appears that all the parents were very ‘obedient’…hehe.. :P

  10. MB: Ya, Papa Bok does sound like one who won’t bother about petty things. And isn’t it good that he doesn’t follow those senseless “fashion”?

Erika: Maybe the teacher was not happy with me. Oh well.  What can they do right?

BBM & Ashes: Hey ladies, thanks for compliments!

DR: I thought so too but I got a earful from his daddy.

ZM: The parents probably wondered why the mummy so lazy.

fuzzoo: Ya lor, I thought some will be bo chap too. Only one came differently but still wearing the school T.

Jan: I guess you’re right. But I do need to get into the habit of considering his feelings.

Eileen: Damien’s daddy so “obedient”? Haha. Surprisingly my hubby also grumbled at me for not making the effort.

  11. Yes, teacher’s day is approaching and if the school IS having some kind of celebration, better start thinking what sort of creative craft Gavin can do to give his teachers. This is one school event I dread most. :(

KY: What?  Got to do creative craft?  That means I do for him ah?  I think I’ll act blur and just buy something. On his behalf.

  12. I’m told children like to conform, especially when they are younger. Seeking acceptance by their peers, I think. Gavin’s still a little young to care, as his classmates don’t as well, but if this theory is to be believed, then yes, better to stick with the sheep and follow the crowd.

Hsin: I think so too.  Ya, better to keep up with the crowd.

  13. Well, I had done that before, but not to such a degree. However, my daughter wasn’t very pleased to be different.

earthemberMaybe she was older already then?  So I guess it’s true.  Kids prefer to conform when they’re much younger huh?
