casserole of my life

The Da Vinci Code

concocted on Tue, 6 Jun 2006 @ 1:29 pm for Entertainment

In the end, we went to watch the movie yesterday as planned.  We felt less guilty given that Gavin was taking his afternoon nap.

I have been planning to watch a movie since February this year.  It did not exactly have to be THIS movie but it had to be something worthy of our time to the big screen.  So did we think it was worth it?

Well, it has an intriguing storyline.  But I did find some parts of the movie too predictable and there was no climax at all.  Tom Hanks was good, but not exceptional.  But I quite like Audrey Tautou, the lead actress.  She’s pretty and fairly credible in her role.

It certainly helped that we haven’t read the book, and knew nothing of the story.  I know many who have read the book were disappointed with the movie.  So I plan to read the book only after watching the movie, if I can afford the time.  It also helped that we have gone to watch the movie purely for entertainment.

Frankly I don’t quite get the controversy connected to this movie.  People can choose what they want to see, and what they want to believe in life.  A message which was also conveyed in the movie.  While I understand that a literary work as such based on religion is just inviting a crusade, protesters should also understand that those  who choose to watch the movie would have the maturity to realise that this is just fiction based on imagination, and not necessary facts.

Overall, I would still say the movie was well worth our time. Especially since the tickets were free.

In the pipeline is another movie which we plan to watch with Gavin.  It’s CARS, a Pixar animated film.  I’m sure Gavin will love it.  Already, he has been watching the trailers on the net a few times daily.  Hehe, I’m kind of excited too, just thinking about our first trip to the big screen with my boy.

Am contemplating of bringing Damien to watch CARS too, it will be his first trip to the cinema…don’t know if he’ll like the idea if he knows it’s gonna be ‘dark dark’ inside…;)

  3. Yup, my sis who read the book find the movie disappointing.

  4. I liked it very much too. Probably cos I didn’t read the book beforehand, like you. I’m reading now, though. And yes, all who read earlier said it was disappointing.

Btw, Eileen, just came back from M’sia and bought the DVD. Out so early, hor? Maybe taken by videography sitting in cinema. haha…

  5. I like the book. It kept me up the whole night trying to finish it. That was how crazy I was then considering I still had to brave going to work the next day.

I have the soft version, courtesy of domestic goddess. You want? Or anyone else wants it?

  6. I’ve never read the book (probably the only person in this city from what I can tell) and would like to see the movie. I like your take on the “controversy” surrounding this movie.

And sign me up for Cars too. It looks great.

  7. yea, the book’s usually better than the movie becos there is so little time to showcase everything but in the book, plenty of description and it goes on and on and on….maybe not catching the movie in the cinemas, will get it on dvd, then get the book….

  9. ZM: Actually cars are really his first love.

Eileen: How about preparing him mentally? I’m also worried that Gavin would freak out but my husband thinks otherwise.

Ashes: Then you must not read until you watch the movie.

MS: Haha…you watched a pirated version?

DR: Thanks, but no. Don’t think I can manage reading a soft copy.

ally: Oh, the controversy must surely be greater from where you are.

Jan: Usually, but there are still some rare exceptions where the movie does more justice than the book. Eg. I love Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto.

wtpgrr: Remember to watch the movie first, and read the book later if you want to.

  10. You mean there’s a movie after the book, ‘I love Kitchen’? Read it some time back but can’t recall much now. The only movie that I found to be better than the book is definitely LOTR. The book was lullaby stuff. With the movie, at least I can drool over Orlando Bloom in the big screen.

  11. I haven’t watched CARS yet. Have watched Over The Hedge and would recommend it to you and your kid. It has educational themes on values that can be taught to children. :)

  12. DR: Yes, a Hong Kong movie some years ago done by Yim Ho starring Jordan Chan, Yasuko Tomito, Karen Mok and Lau Kar Ying. I love the movie so much but was greatly disappointed with the book with its sparse narrative. Again, the depth of emotions could have been lost due to translation.

DP: Nice? I will try to look out for it. Thanks for recommending!
