casserole of my life

Lucky I have a choice

concocted on Wed, 3 May 2006 @ 6:55 pm for Commentaries

Is “dotted” the same as ”dashed”?  I may not be very brilliant but I believe a dotted line looks like this ………… and a dashed line looks like this ———-.  Am I right or am I wrong?  Or am I missing something all together here?

You see, I’ve specified in the stylesheets of my blog that all the lines are to be ”dotted”.  Yet, when I view my blog with the IE browser, the lines are “dashed”, not “dotted.”  But when I look at my blog using Mozilla Firefox, it appears perfectly as DOTTED lines!  So what is happening?

This is very frustrating.  IE always does something ever so slightly just to annoy me.  Not too long ago, I encountered the IE peekaboo bug.  As a result, one of my header design couldn’t sit properly into the header space.  And now, to masquerade dashed lines as dotted lines?  You tell me, is this exasperating or not?

I know this is a small matter to most people, especially the mighty folks who created IE.  But  what is a small peanut to you is a big deal to me.  And hey, my blog is almost like my bread and butter that I cannot live without okay!  It’s so frustrating to know that a first world browser so pervasive, feared used by so many people can shortchange me like that for no good reason.  I’m quite certain the guys there are very well paid right?  So why create this sort of bugs for small folks like me?  Why do I even have to go through the trouble to generate hacks to get over the problems that the guys at the top did not have foresight for?  Geez, this feeling is not unlike paying taxes and getting a raw deal out of it.

Yeah yeah.  So I heard from the mainstream media that IE7 is gonna resolve all my current woes.  HA. HA. HA.  Yeah, right.  I believe that!  Resolve all my current woes, and then create new and bigger woes for me is it?  I may not be brilliant, but I am certainly not dumb to fall for more promises.  The carrots just ain’t good enough for me anymore…

Well, luckily for me, I now have a choice.  I can switch over to Mozilla Firefox.  In fact, I am seriously considering so for my PC and notebook because so far, I am happy with what I see.  Maybe there aren’t big promises over that camp, but at the least, it addresses my bread and butter issues.   I also secretly hope that more people will switch over to use Mozilla Firefox if they find it good.  That way, they can see my blog design, the way I want them to.  It’s also good to let the mighty folks at IE know that we have the power to decide what we want.  They cannot monopolise our choice all the time. That’s a bid for some amount of freedom, cyber-wise.

Okay, let me mull over this.  Seriously and carefully.  I will make a decision soon.  Very soon.  Definitely has to be done by Saturday.

  1. IE always doesn’t do what it’s told to do. It’s like a willful three year old.

I know I was shocked that after I took lots of time to get my “all about me profile” set up just right, I discovered that IE wasn’t bothering to make it perfect like I did.

I’m beginning to think that Mozilla Firefox may be the way to go, but haven’t gotten to actually work with it to find out. Maybe this summer I’ll get on that.

  2. Hey..SS,
I have the same problem with IE too..therefore there are certain things i cannot put on my blog.. because it messes up.. when the person who reads my blog.. use IE.

  3. Hehe you just need to know how to control IE. Just turn off activex and you should be quite alright. Personally I think most people overeact.

IE is good for one thing though. Most corporate sites like banks and large corporations work best with IE. So you cannot really get rid of it just yet.

    =)

  4. Welcome to the world of CSS and browser compatibility woes!

I always have to check both browsers to make sure the design comes out roughly the same. Yes, the dotted line in firefox has smaller dots. Personally, I prefer the dots in IE.

There are actually certain steps you can do to counter the problem with IE. In fact, there are also other not-so-common browsers that will throw out your design too. Just that most pple don’t use them, so you don’t really know if the design goes hay-wire.

Personally, I prefer IE. I find it easier to design in IE, and then tweak CSS in Firefox.

  5. I’ve been using firefox for quite some time and I love it. But I notice that if I open a page that contails some flash stuff and I leave it open for hours, my firefox will crash. I have to go to task manager to kill the process before I can open a new firefox. Not sure if this is common though.

  8. Microsoft sucks right??

I know how you feel.. sometimes these tiny flaw of dotted line appearing as dashed line or missallignment gets onto my nerve too..

  9. Ally: Yeah, wilful! That’s the word…

MB: That’s right. Sometimes happily thinking that it look so great in FF only to find it looks awful in IE.

Loong: What is activex? You’re right. Cannot ignore it, but I’ll like to use another which irritates me less.

EE: I check for both too. Is it difficult to tweak CSS in firefox? Maybe for the advance level…I like the fact that it has an Edit CSS at the sidebar which I can try out to my heart’s content.

Erika: Never had that problem. Maybe some system incompatibility issues?

Jan: You use FF too? Cool right? But still must make sure the blog looks a-okay under IE. Damn troublesome.

DR: Also compatility issue? Hmmm…IE is unfortunately pervasive.

ZM: Those little things can irk us terribly sometimes…

Btw, why none of the locals who have been reading the home news seem to think I’m staging a WAYANG on these two browsers huh?

  10. Dear, dear Sesame, the truth remains that, whatever WAYANG you may create on the two browsers, like the ruling party, Microsoft is here to stay. Hehehe…

Meanwhile, the opposition browser Moz Fox is getting more clout but will face an uphill (not molehill) task in overturning the mountain Microsoft.

For that matter, watch out for Google, who is currently more prized than Microsoft. Because they can multi-task better. LOL!
