This week’s topic for Illo Friday is Under The Sea.
I have very mixed feelings about what is under the sea. On one level, I enjoy the awesome sight of colourful fishes and corals when snorkeling. Yet, on another deeper level, I’m very fearful of what lies beneath. Which is why I never took up diving. In fact I wrote an entry about this fear last year titled Splashing Aliens. Here’s an extract:
Actually, I have always feared the unfathomed depths of the sea. To me, it is another dimension which we cannot totally comprehend. Even though we have the ability to access it, we aren’t able to explore all the depth. So it is not possible for us to know every living organism that dwells within that deep blue sea. Perhaps there is really another kingdom that we are not even aware of?
What about you? What are your feelings towards the world under the sea?

Well, if the sea was as friendly as your picture makes it maybe I’d learn to swim.

thank you for your comment. I agree w/ you about fear underwater. I been diving for a couple of years and I may say that everything is unfamiliar down there yet so attractive…I like your neat and colourful illo!

Like you ..SS, the unknown to me.. i do not venture..
Maybe i’m a scary cat..?? maybe i just too “kiasu”. But i think ppl like me tend not to have as much fun.. as those would go “venture”.
What do you think..??

Space is not the final frontier; it is the oceans and what lies beneath which is more “reachable”. Anyway even scientists do not know much about the underwater world. However the shows they put up on Discovery and National Geographic are fascinating. I do not think I would ever go diving though. Too wide open …

Great piece, really fun to look at, shapes of the life and colours are wonderful!
yes,the sea is a question mark, as you go deeper and deeper, but also that same mystery I think beckons me more than puts me off, although if I saw something very strange, i’d be out of there as fast as my flippers could take me.

Love your orange fish! Cute! I feel like pinching its mouth. Anyway, I love the sea coz of it’s beauty but I have fear for it too, since I can’t swim. Haha.

Well, i’m fearful of the underwater because i don’t know how to swim!! I put on a brave face at the Underwater world last week for the sake of my son, actually i’m so worried that the glass might crack and the fish and water will come pouring out…*shudders*

I find the deep sea fascinating and scary at the same time. I have always wondered if there are mermaids and mermans living down there.

Hey, thanks everyone for the comments. So looks like we share similiar thoughts about the sea.
Erika, Ashes & Eileen: You ladies don’t know how to swim? Maybe time to pick up a new sport. Kind of fun swimming in the pool. If you gals go out to the sea, please keep a life jacket near!

Wow, that’s a cool illo. I love the colours as well as the contrasting texture. Great job!
I haven’t been illustrating because I’ve kept my Wacom tablet (because of the upcoming move) and am too lazy to draw with the mouse.

Whoa, I’m very flattered to have compliments from you Ange! Thanks! I am still not very good with this Illustrator and I think my illos are very one-dimensional. But at least I’m having a better grip with the mouse. Have been looking at Wacom tablets but have not gotten to buy one yet.
