Kiddy haircut

concocted on Sat, 29 Apr 2006 @ 12:09 am for Parenting

I brought Gavin for a haircut at Supercuts Hair Salon yesterday assuming it would be a breeze.

They have this cool little kids’ corner equipped with child friendly haircutting stations.  A car chair and a motorcycle seat, each complete with a TV set.  Surely, I thought, that would keep Gavin well entertained and happy especially since he loves cars.

Well, what I hadn’t anticipated was getting a hairstylist who was not experienced with toddlers.  He was rather slow and Gavin was squirming about in his seat after 5 minutes and pulling at the cape wrapped around his neck.  It got increasing painful after 10 minutes and Gavin was visibily traumatised.  He even tossed away the cape creating more irritation for himself when hair fell on his skin, and more fidgeting.  I was half afraid that his ear might be snipped as a result.   Luckily we managed to pull through and I didn’t have to bring home the boy with half a haircut or half a ear.

For about the same price, I think I’ll be wiser bringing him back to his usual salon at Kitz Kid’s in Parkway Parade next round.   The hairstylists there are definitely better with children and can cut his hair in less than 5 minutes.  While the place may not be that nifty in terms of equipment, it at least is less stressful for us.

  1. He’s ADORABLE! I hear you about the usual haircutting people. I took my daughter to a different place last time and she got this girl who was trying to make her look too grown up for her age. The girl had black hair with red (bright almost purple) highlights. My daughter was terrified of her. Back to the normal place next time.

  4. Hahaha… things we never think about before having kids. How quick the hairstylist can work. My mom cuts Sara’s hair, as well as my niece and nephew. In fact, she cut our hair too when we were young. Not that she’s good or anything, but she can do it fairly quick. And since it’s at home, she sometimes takes two or three tries to get the whole cut done.

  6. BBM: My son would probably have told the girl she’s ugly. He said it recently to a waiter who had a weird colour hair.

MB: He was upset! Luckily we managed to pull through…but now I realised that there is a small cut on his neck.  Probably a result of all the fidgeting.

Ashes: I didn’t see the program. Maybe it was the outlet, maybe the hairstylist or maybe they are better with older kids. He could cut the hair, but he just wasn’t fast enough for toddlers who cannot stay still for very long.  And that’s quite a serious problem for me.

Hsin: Sara’s lucky. My in-law used to cut Gavin’s hair but I figured out it was too ugly for a school going kid.

DR: Aren’t they? Last time only got barbers. I tried bringing him there once and he freaked out!

  7. Poor Gavin and mummy. :( Eu has been having his hair cut in a neighbourhood barber shop since birth. The old uncle is very patient and quick, that was why I went back to have him to get Eu’s hair cut even when we have moved. Lucky me. :P

  10. [...] The cut was slow but slightly better than what he got at Supercuts.  Luckily, he was mostly distracted by the cartoon that was being played on the screen and managed to survive the haircut intact. [...]
