casserole of my life

Driving against the traffic

concocted on Thu, 23 Mar 2006 @ 9:44 am for Rambles

Gosh!  I must thank a few lucky stars this morning.  THANK YOU!!!  Because I actually drove AGAINST the traffic on a route which I’ve travelled many times and yet managed to return home unscathed.

YES I DID!  Lucky the traffic was light and I could quickly reversed and corrected my mistake.  Lucky that was a relatively short junction.  Lucky too that I’ve already dropped off my son and I was alone.

I  don’t know what came over me.  It’s not the first time I took this route!  I’ve travelled this way home a few times already and yet, I made an early turn into the wrong direction.  Can die!  I think the car driver opposite was too stunned to honk at me while the people on the road probably muttered “kayu woman driver” under their breathes.

Anyway, this is NOT the first time this has happened to me.

In 2001, when I was driving in San Francisco one evening, I actually turned right into the wrong side of the road, right into oncoming traffic!  I couldn’t reverse as the traffic was heavy at that time.  So I just continued driving on until the next junction.  For a good 3 minutes!  Haha… that was such an adventure and I was actually very amused with myself at that point even though I was cursing at the same time.

Well, I was able to blame it on an unfamiliar territory, left hand drive and newbie driving skills then.  But now?  I can only say I have a super duper uber poor sense of direction!

Aiyoh, now my husband will have something more to tease me about.

  2. You probably woke up the sleepy drivers on the road with this horrifying stunt of yours and you are most probably the topic of pantry gossips and over-dinner talks for the day. :D

Imagine if one of the drivers on the road blogs and he/she bothers to blog about it. Now wonder what he/she would write???

  4. I used to drive without looking at sign boards or road markings. It’s pretty dangerous not only for other road users but myself too. Had one or two near misses, and that taught me well. So please be careful on the roads. It’s really horrifying moments trying to control the car at those instances.

  5. Yo! I like the new header. It’s so sesame with the short sassy do, but what’s with the star on your bosom? Reminds me of Vietnam.

  7. Dun worry, dun worry, I’ve seen worse. One late night while driving on on the KJE, I saw a car on the EXPRESSWAY driving in the wrong direction too. And he was going fast! OMG! The traffic was very light, about 3-4 cars only. We all swerved to aviod the siao guy. I think he must have been drunk. I called the police immediately but I don’t think they bothered to send anyone to catch him.

  8. And I thought my MIL was the only one who would do such a blunder. She was giving me and kids in the middle of the night to the airport then. While turning into the CTE, she used the expressway exit instead of the entrance. The maid and I who were sitting behind, were so shocked, we didn’t utter a word. And it was high speed some more. Fortunately, there wasn’t a single car on the road.

That’s one reason why it took me so long to drive again in North America, because my mind has already been fixed on the right-hand drive.

  10. I think I was out of sync yesterday. I kept thinking it’s Wed. Boy I am glad I was alone. Would have panicked more if my son was with me. Must endeavour to be more careful!

DR: It’s because I actually have a favourite white top with a red star just like that.

KY: Hey, thanks a lot! Very encouraging for me.

  11. Goodness! Wrong side of the road??!?!?!? Then again, I shouldn’t criticize. I’m one of those “women drivers” that men swear at. Frankly, I don’t give a damn. Everytime I pull a stunt like that (maybe not as bad as driving on the wrong side of the road), the man in the other car gives me a hard glare, and I just give him my startled Bambi look - like saying a dumb blonde saying ooops. If it gives me license to make mistakes, why not? *grin*
