Hello, womenfolks! Today is International Women’s Day! Did anyone know? Uh ah? I thought so. I hadn’t realised until I overheard my yoga instructress saying so.
So what about this day?
Since 1975, International Women’s Year, March 8 has been celebrated as International Women’s Day, “to commemorate the historic struggle to improve women’s lives”. It is celebrated around the world at the local and national levels. The theme of International Women’s Day for 2006 is “Women in decision-making : meeting challenges, creating change”.
You know what they call this day in Chinese? “San Ba Fu Nui Jie.” Yes, San Ba as in “three eight” and San Ba as in blabbermouth airhead. *SNORTS*
Before anyone starts complaining, the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations is actually having a 5-day mega extravagance called Discovery 120. Wow, sounds like a lot of fun and activities. But really, without giving the womenfolks here a break, who is free to participate in these activities?
The big question from me: WHY NO PUBLIC HOLIDAY TODAY?

Yup! Y no public holiday for us women?
Should have mah. Y? Y? Y?

Agreed totally. What’s there to celebrate when there’s no official off-day!

At least you still have 5-day mega extravagance called Discovery 120… I don’t believe we have anything here.
I just heard from my China colleague that all women are entitled to 1/2 day off today.. See.. China is more ‘open’ than us.

Yeah, it’s a real big thing in China. I remember hubs had to treat his female colleagues to a meal on this very day, last year.

Half day in China? Wow, I didn’t know. Actually I came to know about this day in 1995 when I was in Beijing. There was a huge congregation of women from all over the world then. Really massive. Seems that China is more humane in such aspects.
It doesn’t have much significance in S.E.A. though. I don’t even see any coverage about this day except for that of SCWO on the net. But again, it wasn’t well publicised.
Anyway, I doubt a petition will get us a holiday. They will find some economic reason to put it down.

I used to be really impressed that we get a “Woman’s Day” everyday. I asked my mom why was there no “Man’s Day”… and she said that the other 364 days are “Man’s Day”…
