Homemade yusheng salad

concocted on Mon, 30 Jan 2006 @ 10:52 pm for Eats

My side of the family absolutely LOVES the yusheng salad and they can have it almost everyday during the Chinese New Year period.

I’m not exaggerating.

I have a brother who is able to whip out a fantastic dish of the yusheng salad, with quality surpassing most of the restaurants. He makes them with the pre-packed ingredients bought from the supermarket plus some special sweet sauce. More importantly, he has the right tools to shred and dry the vegetables.

YushengYusheng

Spinning the vegetables with this handy tool. Really fun to use! The vegetables are dried via spinning and the water oozes out from the bottom of this gadget.

Shredded carrot and radish which have been spun dry. He also added some green radish and freshly peeled pomelo.

The end result with loads of ground peanut, cut abalone and sweet sauce. You bet it’s tail wagging good!

SteamboatCola

Yeah, the yusheng salad is really just an appetiser. Steamboat is the main course and *burp* that’s just my cola in mum’s antiquated rose design glass.

  3. My granny’s draining out method is, using a cloth bag, and squeeze with all her might. The yu sheng looks so good, I think I’m going to make some this year.

  4. Hey Mama Bok, I don’t know the name of the gadget. My SIL bought it from a local store selling kitchen appliance. Maybe got to go around searching cos that piece she got was a broken sample from HK she bought for $2 and apparently, the only piece left.

Hi Ange, I’ve heard of that one but it’s way too tedious. My brother used to just leave the vegetable under the fan to air for a few hours. But again, too time consuming.

  5. Woah, sounds very professional. We don’t dry our veggies out when we do it and haven’t found it made it worse. Must try drying them next time. Anyway, I know the contraption your brother uses. I haven’t seen in Singapore before, but it’s pretty common in Tokyo.

  6. Sounds like a lot of work to me. But I love yusheng. Especially with lots of raw fish!

  7. I love Yee Sang too.. looks yummy! Btw, he invented the tool? Or it’s widely available? Just for drying? Not for shredding?

  8. Hi Zara’s Mama: No lah, he didn’t invent the tool. It’s available in the market but not widely. It is for drying. He uses another tool for shredding but I didn’t see it that day. So no pix. But maybe can check around with those shops selling household appliances. They probably know.
