casserole of my life

Chinese New Year food

concocted on Sun, 29 Jan 2006 @ 11:09 am for Eats

 Longan
This is what I made my family this morning for breakfast.  It’s longan soup with red dates and barley.  It’s tradition that we eat this with 2 eggs on the first day of Chinese New Year every year.
Reunion dinner
We had an 8-course reunion dinner at the Resort Garden Restaurant.  The quality of the food was quite good despite the crowd.  In fact, it was so good that I forgot to take many of the pictures.
Gavin
This isn’t food of course.   Just my silly boy enjoying a whiff of air from the air blower while the family was having a game of bowling after the dinner.

  8. Haven’t heard of longan with eggs sweet soup for CNY, but it looks yummy. Noticed that many families in Spore are going out for reunion dinner. Yup, no cleaning and washing.

Gong Xi Fa Cai to you and your family!

  9. What dialect group are you? I don’t know anyone who starts CNY with tong sui. And eggs in it too! Very interesting. What’s the rationale?

  10. Hi Hsin: I’m Hokkien but I’m not sure if tong sui originates from this dialect group. Anyway, I’ve been following my mum who makes this every 1st day of the CNY for good luck. The eggs are meant to compensate the birthday eggs if it’s somehow missed out during the year.
