Hip Hong Kong cafe

concocted on Tue, 13 Dec 2005 @ 3:36 pm for Eats

We spotted a Hong Kong cafe near our place over the weekend and decided to give it a try this evening. We were really hoping for some Hong Kong style fried rice stick noodle which is the equivalent of our local hor fun. But no such luck. Instead, they serve fried mee sua and other types of noodles. So we ordered the mee sua and a plate of pork floss rice plus some dim sum. The food wasn’t too bad. In fact, the dim sum is really quite good. This is so great! We don’t have to travel all the way to town just for dim sum in future!

Actually, what I liked most is the hip retro ambience. Guess what they used to serve us our Macau style tea? The same 555 brand stainless steel mug which we used to brush our teeth, wash our hair and sometimes also drink our tea on our past trekking trips! This is so nostalgic! We’re definitely going to come back often!

Our shopping centre X’mas tree

concocted on Mon, 12 Dec 2005 @ 11:12 am for Family

For years, we have been amusing ourselves with a small 1 feet tree every X’mas. So this year, when we decided to buy a bigger tree, we really went berserk big time! We bought a 7 feet tree, and almost bought the entire house of ornaments! I am quite sure we can win a prize if there is a household X’mas tree competition because our tree actually looks like a display X’mas tree from a shopping centre! I am now wondering if this is going to become a permanent feature in our living room because I certainly do not look forward to removing the decorations and keeping the tree at all!

Brand new looking. 18K white gold. 6 bucks only. Ha Ha Ha. Actually. It’s an old ring. Bought in 2001. Sent for replating. Now looking new. Love this ring. Save the day.

My childhood food

concocted on Sat, 10 Dec 2005 @ 1:35 am for Blogging, Eats

Wow kow! Have been tagged by Kwai Yoke of Little Foot Steps on the five kinds of food that I absolutely loved during my childhood, but no longer eat or are able to find them. At first I thought I wouldn’t be able to come up with five, but after digging into my memory, I can actually remember a number of scrumptious food I ate before.

1. Deep fried oyster fritter
Gosh, this is by far the best food I’ve eaten in my life. It’s made by my mum. I remembered following her to some unknown wet market to buy the oysters. She’ll then mix the oysters with some batter and vegetables and then deep fried them. You probably can find some oyster fritters out there but nothing can be compared with what my mum made. IT. IS. UNMATCHABLE. I wish I can eat it again but it’s hard to find fresh oysters in Singapore.

2. Steam flower crab
This is another dish my mum used to cook for me because I love craps crabs. Since she couldn’t always find fresh crabs, she would buy flower crabs and steam them. Although not as meaty, it is as sweet and delightful. I haven’t had these for ages now as these days I only eat Sri Lankan crabs.

3. Soupy Mee Tai Mak
I used to eat this at my primary school canteen. Those days, it only cost me about 30 cents to buy a bowl of steaming hot mee tai mak served with some fish cake. Comfort food that I don’t eat anymore.

4. White steam rice cake or Bok Tong Go
Oh, I love the very simple steam rice cake which has some Chinese characters on top. It’s usually bought during festivities for praying purposes. It is made of femented rice flour and is a sticky, chewy treat with a very light and slightly sweet and sour taste. I could finish up the entire cake by myself.

5. Char Kway
I had this primary school mate whose father would go round our neighbourhood peddling his char kway on foot. It is actually fried carrot cake. I cannot for my life remember what he used to cook, but he definitely served piping hot carrot cake on banana leaf for less than 50 cents. It was uber delicious and till today, I haven’t been able to taste anything like it.

Those who were tagged before me: Blur-blur, Ashley’s Mummy, Fannie & Kwai Yoke
I tag the following ladies for their food memories: Michiko, Mama Bok & Mel.

Have fun!

Airy airy footwear

concocted on Thu, 8 Dec 2005 @ 4:26 am for Femilicious

FlipflopsThis is my new pair of flip flops from Novo, a shoe shop located at the ground floor of Suntec City.

The shop carries quite a stylish range of flip flops and this is my second pair from there. Actually, this pair is strictly speaking, not flip flops because it comes with a back strap. More like a cross between flip flops and sandals, I suppose. But I still call it flip flops because it feels and looks like one. It’s comfortable and the strap actually lets me get away at certain places with dress codes. Most important, I like it because it shows off my pretty feet. :)
